The tragic events of the Isaaq genocide, also known as the Hargeisa Holocaust, in Somaliland in the late 1980s, resulted more 500,000 deaths, with the Isaaq people being the targets. This heinous campaign of violence was launched after the Somali government declared a state of emergency, and a campaign of repression against the Isaaq people ensued, led by the military and other security forces. This brutal campaign of terror included mass killings, torture, rape, and forced disappearances, which were carried out on a massive scale, with women, children, and the elderly being killed indiscriminately.
